Current Status of Cardiac Transplantation in Korea

Abstract
Cardiac transplantation first performed in 1967. But virtually abandoned in the 1970s. is now well accepted therapy for end-stage heart disease. One year survival rates approximate 80% around the world. Which is obviously obtained from the use of
cyclosporine. The purpose of this report is to introduce the current status of cardiac transplantation in Korea. The first cardiac transplantation in Korea was performed by Dr. Song of Asan Medical Center in 1992. Thereafter Dr. Rho of Seoul
National
University Hospital and Dr. Park of Sejong General Hospital reported their first cases in 1994 followed by three other surgeons reporting their cases. So far total of 42 cases were done at 6 centers of seoul and sububan cities until May of 1995
with a
mortality of 7 cases. The achievement of above result, however, is not without problems. The brain death law have not been passed yet and the government affiliated insurance company has been very reluctant to reimburse the hospital cost of the
transplantation. And there's no nationalized system of donor organ sharing like UNOS in America. In spite of all these difficulties, we expect the cardiac transplantation in Korea would be on its expanding stage for a while in number of cases as
well as
number of centers due to favorable public attitude for organ donation and the need for the surgery.
